中学時代の思い出：ホノルルマラソンと初めての海外

小学校を卒業して、サッカー推薦で私立中学校に入学しました。
この学校は中高一貫校で、そのまま高校に進学できる環境。正直、その安心感に甘えてしまい、勉強はほとんど手をつけませんでした…。この“油断”がのちに高校生活で自分を苦しめるのですが、それはまた今度。（笑）

さて、この中学校の最大のイベントといえば「ホノルルマラソン」！🏃
それもフルマラソン42.195kmに挑戦すること。サッカーはしていたけど、マラソンはまったくの初心者。経験といえば小学生の頃の持久走大会くらい。こんな私は、本番1か月前から準備を始め、本番に挑みました。

走ること自体は本当にきつかった。でも、それ以上に僕の心を揺さぶったのは「初めての海外体験」でした。

初めての海外で感じた驚き

空港を出た瞬間、まず空の青さと空気の温かさにびっくり。ヤシの木が並び、南国らしい開放的な雰囲気が広がっていました。建物の色も日本とは違い、カラフルで明るく、歩くだけで楽しい。

現地の人たちはとてもフレンドリーで、すれ違うだけで笑顔を見せてくれる人も多く、日本との違いを強く感じました。

英語とカルチャーショック

一番印象的だったのは、やっぱり英語。
小学3年生まで英会話教室に通っていたものの、いざ現地では全く話せません。同級生とマクドナルドに行ったときなんて、どう注文すればいいかわからず、メニューを指差して「これください」と日本語でお願いしました（笑）。それでもハンバーガーが出てきたことが嬉しくて、「言葉が通じなくても、なんとかなるんだ」と妙な自信がついたのを覚えています。（笑）

食べ物と買い物の楽しさ

現地で食べたものは、どれもサイズが大きくて驚きました。特にパンケーキやハンバーガーは、日本で食べるものの2倍くらい。味ももちろん美味しくて、「アメリカの食べ物って豪快だなあ」と感動しました。
ショッピングでは、日本では見かけないようなグッズやカラフルなお土産が並んでいて、どれも新鮮でした。

帰りたくなかった気持ち

マラソンを走り切った達成感は大きかったけれど、それ以上に「海外の楽しさ」が心に残りました。帰国の日が近づくにつれて、「もっとここにいたい」「将来は絶対にここに住むんだ」と強く思うようになりました。

フルマラソンを完走した喜びと、海外という広い世界を知ったワクワク。これらの体験は、今でも僕の中学時代を象徴する大きな思い出です。

After graduating from elementary school, I entered a private junior high school on a soccer recommendation.
It was an integrated junior and senior high school, so I could move on to high school without taking any entrance exams. To be honest, I got too comfortable in that safe environment and barely studied at all… That “complacency” would later come back to haunt me in high school, but that’s a story for another time. (lol)

Now, the biggest event at this school was the Honolulu Marathon!
Yes, the full marathon—42.195 km. I had played soccer, but I was a complete beginner when it came to running long distances. My only experience was a long-distance race back in elementary school. Still, I started training one month before the race and gave it a shot.

Running itself was incredibly tough. But what moved me even more was the fact that this was my first trip abroad.

The moment I stepped out of the airport, I was struck by the blue sky and the warmth of the air. Palm trees lined the streets, and a tropical, open atmosphere spread out before me. The buildings were colorful and bright—so different from Japan. Just walking around felt exciting.

The local people were very friendly. Many smiled at us as they passed by, and I clearly felt the cultural difference from Japan.

The thing that left the biggest impression on me was, of course, English.
Even though I had gone to an English conversation school until the third grade of elementary school, I couldn’t really speak once I got there. When I went to McDonald’s with my classmates, I had no idea how to order. In the end, I just pointed at the menu and said in Japanese, “This, please.” (lol) To my surprise, I still got the hamburger I wanted, and that made me strangely happy. It even gave me a little confidence, like, “Maybe you can get by even without the language.”

The food was huge compared to Japan! The pancakes and hamburgers were about twice the size I was used to, and of course, they were delicious. I remember thinking, “American food is so bold!” and being impressed.
Shopping was also fun—everything felt fresh, with colorful souvenirs and goods I had never seen in Japan.

Finishing the marathon gave me a big sense of accomplishment, but even more than that, the excitement of discovering how fun it was to be overseas stayed with me. As the return date got closer, I found myself thinking, “I want to stay here longer. Someday, I’m definitely going to live here.”

Bringing back both the joy of completing a full marathon and the thrill of discovering the wider world, this experience became one of the most important memories of my junior high school days.
